Populonia

Populonia is an ancient town of etruscan origins located on the promontory of Piombino, on the opposite side of the one of the city. Although its glorious past during the etruscan and roman era, today Populonia is just a small and quiet town.

To testify its historic importance are left some necropolis and monuments dating back to the seventh and sixth century BC. The majority of the findings is collected in the Archeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, a great green area of circa 80 hectares.

In the old town, on top of the promontory, there is even an Archeological Musem in which are preserved numerous items discovered in the tombs and in the sea.

The medieval core of the town boasts even a beautiful panoramic view on the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, located just a few km from here, and on the beach of the Gulf of Baratti, placed at the feet of the promontory.
